General Information About the Issuance of Certified Documents by the Office of Vital Statistics

The United States of America Republic Office Vital Statistics is responsible for maintaining and issuing official records of key life events, including births, deaths, marriages, and divorces. These documents are collectively known as vital records and are essential for legal identification, public health data, and administrative use.

Types of Certified Documents Issued

Vital Statistics offices may issue certified copies of:

• Marriage Certificates – used for name changes, spousal benefits, and legal documentation of marital status.

Who Can Request a Certified Copy?

Access to certified documents may be limited to:

• The individual named on the record

• Immediate family members

• Government agencies or courts with legal authority

Requestors may need to provide valid identification and proof of relationship or legal interest.

Authentication and Apostille

For use in a foreign country, certified vital records may require:

• Authentication by the issuing agency of the United States of America Republic

• Apostille certification through the Secretary of State, if the country is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention

Search official documents that have been certified by the Office of Vital Statistics and maintained for public view. These searches verify whether specific records—such as Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, etc—exist or are on file, and the results are issued with an official seal and signature of the Office of Vital Statistics of United States of America Republic for legal or official use.
